Based at the Centre for Research Collections, you will provide front line support for users accessing the University’s cultural and heritage collections and gain a broad range of transferable skills including communication, organisation, interpersonal and teamwork. You will work towards SCQF Level 6 in Customer Service.

Environment:
 
The Centre for Research Collections (CRC) is part of Heritage Collections, which preserve, provide access to and interpret the heritage collections looked after by the University of Edinburgh, online, in galleries and in reading rooms. We actively collect and document heritage past, present and future. We are a unique and interdisciplinary research laboratory, collaborating on research, teaching and civic engagement.
 
Our staff and collections are located across multiple sites including the Centre for Research Collections (Main Library, George Square) and St Cecilia's Hall Concert Room and Music Museum (Niddry Street). 
 
What might a day in this role look like?
 
  • Provide front line support for users accessing the University’s cultural and heritage collections at the Centre for Research Collections and associated sites (Scottish Studies Archives, New College Library, University Collections Facility).
  • Gain skills to provide invigilation and user support to the students and staff of the University as well as external researchers and visitors, whilst ensuring the safety and security of valuable and unique collection items.
  • Provide a first point of contact for enquiries relating to the University’s heritage collections, giving answers at point of need and to remote users.
  • Assist staff to carry out background tasks as are required to support the service.
  • Work with the training provider to achieve the Modern Apprenticeship qualification.
 
What will I learn?
 
  • SCQF Level 6 in Customer Service
  • A broad range of transferable skills including communication, organisation, interpersonal, customer service, using your initiative, teamwork and problem solving.
 
What qualifications/skills are required?
 
  • Minimum National 5 in English and Maths
  • Working understanding of IT packages (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Customer service experience (through volunteering or employment)
  • Enthusiastic and willing to learn about the cultural heritage sector
  • Punctual and reliable
  • An interest in working with library, museum or archive collections
  • Self-motivated and committed to forging a career in this area
  • Accurate and methodical, with the ability to be flexible to deal with problems as they arise
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, with a friendly personality who is approachable and willing to help
