We are excited to launch our 2023 campaign to find two apprentices, one who will specialise in Quality Assurance (QA) and the other in Security. You will undertake the award-winning Forrit Apprenticeship Scheme (FAS). In conjunction with formal qualifications and training, the scheme will guide you through varying teams within the company. You will study towards BSc (Hons) Software Development at Edinburgh Napier University.

We launched our apprenticeship scheme in 2015, with several former apprentices now in leading roles in the company. We are extremely proud of our apprentices and the value they bring from day one. They help us benefit from the latest thinking and processes, strengthen our business and increase the support we provide to our clients. We are excited to launch our 2023 campaign to find two apprentices, one who will specialise in Quality Assurance (QA) and the other in Security. Employee wellbeing and work-life balance is important to us, and that’s why we give our apprentices one day of study leave per week, included in their weekly contracted 40 hours.

What might a day in this role look like?
 
You will undertake the award-winning Forrit Apprenticeship Scheme (FAS). In conjunction with formal qualifications and training, the scheme will guide you through varying teams within the company. In the first year, you will be starting in either the QA or Security teams, building up your skills with software development and/or Security fundamentals, before specialising in a role in either web development, Security or QA. In the second year, you will move onto a new team which allows you to gain valuable experience from multiple disciplines before choosing your desired career path.
 
As part of the QA/Security teams, you will be:

  • Verifying client tickets daily
  • Designing or maintaining automated testing/security frameworks
  • Identifying and suggesting improvements to test/security processes
  • Collaborating with and learning from team members to implement solutions to a high standard of code that matches the requirements
  • Assisting with configuration management of third-party software and applications
  • Contributing to the management of corporate data
  • Supporting users’ IT applications and software
  • Delivering the deployment and testing of applications and software
  • Developing expertise with the creation and maintenance of reports
  • Producing technical and user support documentation
  • Taking part in regular planning sessions to ensure development tasks are described to a high quality
  • Proactively seeking out learning opportunities
  • Effectively managing competing demands of work commitments and studying for qualifications and training.
 
What will I learn?
 
You will study on a degree programme towards a BSc (Hons) Software Development at Edinburgh Napier University. What you do in work will also count towards your degree, where you will gain vital industry experience in the following:

  • Technology (Software): Agile development environment, high-level language coding skills, web UI development, quality and software testing, software development lifecycle, developing innovative software solutions
  • Business: global business including working in an agile team and business communications
  • Personal and interpersonal skills: interacting with a team of experienced and motivated people, offering guidance and recommendations for technical decision making, collaborating with the test team to validate and verify the quality of the solutions, preparing status reports and updating your managers
  • Project management: Dealing with multiple tasks and projects and solving problems quickly and accurately.
 
What qualifications/skills are required?
 
Forrit offers an accelerated pathway to a degree for those with IT/Computing related qualifications at SCQF Level 8. This includes either:

  • HND at Grade B in a related discipline, Grade A is preferred
  • Modern Apprenticeship at SCQF Level 8
  • Certificate of Higher Education at SCQF 8 (year 2) in a relevant University subject.
 
Applications will also be considered for those who meet the typical entry requirements of Edinburgh Napier University, which are either:

  • A minimum of four SQA Highers at Grade BBBB (or equivalent) including Computing or Maths
  • A Foundation Apprenticeship in IT: Software Development at SCQF Level 6 plus two SQA Highers at Grade BB
  • A Modern Apprenticeship at SCQF Level 6-7 in an ICT/Digital related discipline.
 
Residency requirements:

  • Must be living in Scotland by the start of their course (SAAS advises by 1 August for a September course start)
  • Must be Ordinarily Resident (habitual and normal residence in one place) in Scotland for the duration of the course with the intention of staying and living here, and not just to undertake a course of study
  • EU/International applicants must have Settled Status in the UK and have been living in the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man for 3 years prior to course start, without any breaks.
