This is a fantastic opportunity to join the Development & Regeneration team undertaking work-based learning whilst studying towards BSc (Hons) Construction and the Built Environment on a day release basis at Heriot-Watt University.

Environment:
 
Our Development & Regeneration team is responsible for the delivery of the Council’s housebuilding programme, including acquisition of sites, designing new homes and communities, procurement of contractors and developers and taking handover of new homes. The team works with a number of Council services including Planning, Transport, Legal, Finance and Building Standards to design and deliver new homes to the highest quality to meet housing need across the city. You will also work with external contractors and consultants. 
 
What might a day in this role look like?
 
Working in Edinburgh offers the opportunity to gain a wide range of experience due to the diversity of development sites, to work with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders and to be part of a committed team. You will be joining us at a time when supporting the construction industry, the wider economy and providing much needed affordable housing is vital to the city.

  • Assist with project management of construction projects within the Council’s house building programme
  • Assist in developing and processing reports for relevant Boards, Council Committees, and other bodies
  • Assist with community engagement and stakeholder events for new developments
  • Liaise with other Council services to help progress the development process
  • Assist with procurement of housing contractors and other professional consultants
  • Support the development of design specifications and briefs for new housing development
  • Contribute to management of multi-disciplinary design teams in delivering key new build housing projects
  • Develop effective internal and external contacts and partnerships
  • Assess the effectiveness and lessons learned from projects and advise of operational changes and improvements.
 
What will I learn?
 
You will study towards BSc (Hons) in Construction and the Built Environment on a day release basis at Heriot-Watt University, and you will undertake relevant modules to supplement this learning and develop general project management and business knowledge and skills.
 
What qualifications/skills are required?

  • 4 Highers or at least 2 or 3 Highers with relevant work experience
  • Competence in all standard office applications including Microsoft Office
  • Good numeracy and IT skills
  • Good communication skills and under supervision can write technical reports and letters.
 
All applicants will be assessed individually, and we will work with Heriot-Watt University to assess the entry criteria based on your individual circumstances.
