This programme aims to prepare young people with disabilities aged between 16 and 29 years for full-time, competitive employment. You will take part in 3 x 10-week internships with the host employer (Edinburgh Council and Virgin Hotels Edinburgh or NHS Lothian) over 38 weeks, gaining 600+ hours of work practice. You will acquire competitive, marketable and transferable skills, and build communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills. The programme starts in August 2026 and lasts for one academic year.

Edinburgh Project SEARCH is part of an international employability programme. It aims to prepare young people with disabilities, aged between 16 and 29 years old, for full-time, competitive employment. Edinburgh Project SEARCH is delivered in partnership with the City of Edinburgh Council, Virgin Hotels Edinburgh, Edinburgh College, and NHS Lothian.
 
Environment:
 
Edinburgh Project SEARCH is a business-led programme, which means the young people learn relevant, marketable skills while immersed in the business environment. The young people take part in 3 x 10-week internships with the host employer (Edinburgh Council, Virgin Hotels Edinburgh or NHS Lothian) over 38 weeks, gaining 600+ hours of work practice, resulting in improved skills and confidence. A tutor and job coaches are based on site at all times, working closely with the business to provide training room learning, internships and ongoing support. The programme starts in August 2026 and lasts for one academic year. On completion of the programme, the young people would have gained all of the skills to be successful in finding and sustaining employment and will continue to be supported by the programme staff to do this.
 
What might a day in this role look like?
 
You will complete at least 4 hours each day at an internship, and 1 hour 30 minutes each day within the Edinburgh Project SEARCH training room. Hours of the programme are 9 am - 4 pm Monday to Friday during Edinburgh College term-time. Types of internships available typically include administration, reception, mail room, catering, hospitality, gardening, portering, domestic assistant, stores department, concierge, and operative assistant.
 
What will I learn?
 
Interns will acquire competitive, marketable and transferable skills, and build their communication, teamwork and problem-solving abilities. You must want to:
 
  • complete 3 different internships within the City of Edinburgh Council and Virgin Hotels Edinburgh or NHS Lothian
  • work towards an SQA Employability Award
  • complete the Edinburgh Project SEARCH curriculum
  • achieve full-time competitive employment on completion of the programme.
 
What qualifications/skills are required?
 
To be eligible for Edinburgh Project SEARCH you must:
 
  • be aged between 16 and 29 years old
  • want to secure a full-time job (16+ hours)
  • have a recognised disability
  • live within Edinburgh and the Lothians
  • be able to commit to the programme full-time for one academic year
  • be able to travel alone or learn how to do this by the time the programme starts.
