![]() Contract: Permanent/Part-time Salary: £17,902 per annum Employer: The National Library of Scotland Closing Date: Tuesday 31 January Based at our Causewayside building in Edinburgh, you will help to make our books, newspapers, magazines, theatre/football programmes and other printed materials available to anyone who wants to use them. You will be involved in handling and preparing collection materials for safe storage. This job would be especially suitable for young people aged 18-24 who have little or no work experience. Employer:
The National Library of Scotland is a reference library with world-class collections. It is also Scotland's largest library and one of the major research libraries in Europe. Our collections range from rare historical documents to online journals, covering every subject. We specialise in Scotland's knowledge, history and culture. Environment: The workplace is at the Library’s Causewayside building on Salisbury Place, “behind the scenes” at the Library. Your time will be split between working on a computer and sorting, arranging and preparing books - unpacking boxes and moving books and boxes on trollies around the Library. You will be working as part of a team, but you won’t be working with the public. Working hours are 30 hours per week. Most people start work between 8.30 and 9.30 am and finish work between 4.30 and 5.30 pm. You must take a minimum of 30 minutes for your lunch break. What might a day in this role look like? Thousands of books and other material come into the Library every month. These need to be catalogued and given a unique shelfmark so that users of the Library can get access to them as quickly as possible. Metadata is a description of the book that appears in the catalogue - it lets our customers see what we have. A shelfmark tells us where the book is kept so we can fetch it for customers when needed. Much of the day will be taken up with physically handling newly-arrived collection material - unpacking, sorting and preparing the materials for shelfmarking, metadata creation and storage. You’ll also work with our “hidden collections” - books and other materials (football or theatre programmes, flyers, pamphlets etc) which we have in storage but that can’t be easily found by our customers. Your job would include helping to make these collections available by sorting, shelfmarking and adding metadata. You will speak to your manager throughout the working week and can expect regular chats about your work. Your work won’t be closely supervised every day so it’s really important that you take full responsibility for your own work and especially for working quickly and accurately to meet your targets. What will I learn?
If you decide that you would like a career in library work, the Library can support you by helping you gain relevant qualifications while you are working with us - up to the equivalent of a post-graduate qualification. What qualifications/skills are required?
