Based in Midlothian, you will be part of the team designing and developing our solutions and will get great hands-on experience of all parts of the project lifecycle. You will study towards BSc (Hons) Software Development at Edinburgh Napier University.

Pigeon Penguin design and build websites in multiple sectors: education, sport, media, small business, news, politics, community, industry and others. We are based in Midlothian but that does not limit our reach. Technology ensures we work locally with clients in Edinburgh, the Lothians and Borders, but also with clients in London, Canada and Australia.
 
Environment:
 
Due to organisational growth, we are hiring a Graduate Apprentice Web Developer to support an exciting period of expansion. You will be the second Graduate Apprentice to join the business. We undertake lots of interesting projects building websites and apps for small and medium size businesses. We get to know our clients well so we can appreciate and understand their needs and then design great business solutions. We really do enjoy our work.
 
What might a day in this role look like?
 
From your first day, you will be part of the team designing and developing our solutions. As we are a small company, you will get great hands-on experience of all parts of the project lifecycle. You will be speaking to clients and delivering solutions for them. You will see what a transformative effect bespoke software solutions can have on a business. You will be well supported by an experienced mentor as you grow into your new career. Our apprenticeship offers a real-world opportunity for candidates looking to build a successful and rewarding career in software development.
 
What will I learn?
 
You will study on a 4 year degree programme towards BSc (Hons) Software Development at Edinburgh Napier University on day release basis. What you do in work will also count towards your degree, where you will gain vital industry experience in the following:

  • Technology (Software): Agile development environment, high-level language coding skills, web UI development, quality and software testing, software development lifecycle, developing innovative software solutions
  • Business: global business including working in an agile team and business communications
  • Personal and interpersonal skills: interacting with a team of experienced and motivated people, offering guidance and recommendations for technical decision making, collaborating with the test team to validate and verify the quality of the solutions, preparing status reports and updating your managers
  • Project management: Dealing with multiple tasks and projects and solving problems quickly and accurately.
 
What qualifications/skills are required?
 
To meet the academic entry requirements for this Graduate Apprenticeship you must hold EITHER:

  • A minimum of four SQA Highers at Grade BBBB (or equivalent) including Computing or Maths plus National 5 English at C. National 5 Maths at C is also required if not taken at Higher;
  • A Foundation Apprenticeship in IT: Software Development at SCQF Level 6 plus two SQA Highers at Grade BB;
  • A Modern Apprenticeship at SCQF Level 6-7 in an ICT/Digital related discipline; OR
  • An HNC/HND in a related discipline.
 
If you do not hold any of the above qualifications or awards but have relevant work experience, you may be able to enter this programme at first year. Your application will be considered on an individual basis, taking into consideration your previous study and experience.
 
The following  qualities are also required:

  • Basic knowledge of and enthusiasm for programming and web development
  • Showing creativity and interest in coming up with new ideas that improve and move solutions forward
  • An enquiring mind with a desire to learn and understand complexity
  • Attention to detail with a commitment to a quality approach to software development
  • A positive outlook and a personable character happy to speak to everyone.
