In School Activity

The Edinburgh Guarantee supports young people while in school by making the following opportunities available to them.

The JET Academy is a work-based learning programme for S4-S6 school pupils which combines school education with vocational training and work experience. It is the Edinburgh model for the implementation of developing the Young Workforce National Work Placements Standards.

JET stands for Job, Education and Training and aims to prepare young people for the world of work by providing an opportunity to gain valuable work experience and a nationally recognised Employability Award.

Young people will be matched to a work placement where they will undertake extended work experience with an employer over an agreed period of time. Their school timetable will be adjusted to accommodate this. This gives young people a realistic experience of the world of work and employer expectations.

Career Ready is an ambitious business led charity that helps raise young people's aspirations and life chances by bridging the gap between education and employment.  This is done by giving S5 and S6 pupils access to real experience of the world of work.

Career Ready is an inspirational programme that includes mentoring, 'guru lectures' and internships.  Students begin their experience in S5 and follow a rigorous two-year enrichment programme alongside their school curriculum, enabling them to progress to higher education or the world of work from a much more informed, inspired and confident base.

Foundation Apprenticeships help to create better links between young people, education and employers and to better prepare young people for the world of work.

Foundation Apprenticeship are undertaken over one or two years, usually starting in S5 or S6. Pupils spend time away from school, at college and with an employer, therefore gaining a real, practical work placement which will give their career a head start and look great on their CV. Most major universities and colleges in Scotland accept Foundation Apprenticeships as entry requirements, equivalent to one SQA Higher.
